The "double-fisherman's knot" is a delightful version of the ancient handfasting; yet another way to symbolize the literal "tying of the knot", this ceremonial styling uses one of the simplest sailing knots, which also turns out to be one of the very sturdiest.
As the knot strength increases under pressure, the rope will actually break before the knot will. It is a marvelous, illustration of the many ceremonial forms of bonding & union. I had the great pleasure of performing it on a pontoon boat on Beaver Lake for my couple & about 15 friends & family on a lovely sunny spring afternoon recently.
